Hearing that the powers that be were using “Mother Nature”
as the excuse for the low water
levels in Lake Temagami I waited until I had a chance to check out a few back
lakes before responding.
There is no argument that we have had an unusually dry spring but the water
levels in the back lakes
that nature controls seem to be normal. It seems to be the water levels in water
systems controlled by
dams that are seriously low.
Ontario Power Generation explains on their web page how they gather data on
the moisture
levels in the bush twice a week throughout the year. If the data was collected
how could they not have
known there was no snow and no moisture in the bush in the late spring? Why
after opening the dams
in January would they again do a draw down in March?
A lake resident commented the other day, “that if we so much as move a
stone we are charged.
Here we have a government agency potentially destroying the lake trout fry on
shoals out of the water
in the winter and deterring the walleye from spawning because their spawning
areas are high and dry in
the spring.” No government agency takes responsibility for screwing up.
Even though they apparently
have the ability to automatically open and close the dams…. It is Mother
Nature’s fault.
